AVIF is one of the newest image formats on the web, and many apps, older phones and Windows versions still cannot open it. This tool converts AVIF files to universally supported JPG, directly in your browser.

AVIF is built on the AV1 video codec and is remarkably efficient: a photo can be half the size of a JPG that looks the same. That is why streaming services and large websites have started using it. The downside is support. Photoshop, older versions of Windows and macOS, many messaging apps and most printers do not understand AVIF yet.

Converting to JPG trades a bigger file for compatibility. At quality 90 you will not see a difference on normal photos. HDR information, if the AVIF contains any, is mapped to the standard colour range that JPG supports.

    Which browsers can convert AVIF?

Because the conversion uses your browser’s own decoder, the browser needs to understand AVIF. Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (iOS 16 and macOS Ventura or newer) all do. If your file will not open, update your browser or try another one.

    Frequently asked questions

    Are my AVIF files uploaded?

No. Decoding and encoding happen locally in your browser, so your images stay on your device.

Why can’t I open AVIF files on my computer?

AVIF is new, and many programs have not added support yet. On Windows it often needs an extra extension from the Microsoft Store. Converting to JPG is the quickest way to open the image anywhere.

Will the JPG be larger than the AVIF?

Usually yes, often about twice the size. AVIF is far more efficient, and JPG needs more data to show the same picture.

What happens to transparent parts of the image?

They are filled with the background colour you choose, white by default, because JPG cannot store transparency.

The tool says it cannot read my file. What can I do?

Your browser may be too old to decode AVIF. Update it, or try the latest Chrome or Firefox. Very rare AVIF variants, such as image sequences, may also fail.
