JPG has been the standard photo format since the 1990s. WebP is newer and uses smarter compression, so the same photo needs fewer bytes for the same visible detail. For a website with dozens of product or blog photos, that adds up to a noticeably faster page.

For sending photos to friends, printing them or uploading them to older systems, JPG is still the safer choice. Use WebP for images that will be shown on web pages.

    Avoid compressing twice

A JPG has already been compressed once, and converting it to WebP compresses it again. Start from the best-quality JPG you have, not one that was downloaded from a social network or messaging app, and avoid very low quality settings. If the WebP comes out larger than the JPG, the original was already heavily compressed and you can simply keep the JPG.

    Phone photos and rotation

Phones often save photos sideways and store a note saying how to turn them. FormatYeti applies that rotation, so the WebP files always appear the right way up. Location data and other camera details are not copied into the new files.

    Frequently asked questions

    Are my photos uploaded?

No. Your browser does the conversion on your device, and the photos are never sent anywhere.

Will the WebP look worse than the JPG?

At quality 80 or higher, the difference is very hard to see at normal viewing size. Use the preview to compare before downloading.

Why is my WebP file bigger than the JPG?

This can happen when the JPG was already compressed very strongly. Try a lower quality setting, or keep the original JPG.

    Is GPS location removed?

Yes. Location data and other camera information stored in the JPG are not copied into the WebP file.

    Does it work on iPhone?

Yes. Safari cannot save WebP by itself, so a small encoder is loaded into the page the first time you convert. The work still happens on your phone.
