How to convert PNG to ICO

    1. Base camp

Choose a PNG, ideally square and at least 256×256 pixels with a transparent background. JPG, WebP and SVG also work.

    2. Camp 1

Tick the icon sizes you want. For a website favicon, 16, 32 and 48 pixels are enough. For Windows apps add 256.

    3. Summit

Download the .ico file and upload it to your website’s root folder as favicon.ico, or use it in your app.

An ICO file is a small container that bundles several versions of the same icon. Windows and browsers pick the size that fits best: 16×16 for a browser tab, 32×32 for the taskbar, 48×48 for desktop shortcuts and 256×256 for large icon views. Shipping all of them in one file means the icon looks sharp everywhere instead of being scaled from a single size.

Each image inside the ICO files made here is stored as PNG data, which Windows Vista and every later version, and all current browsers, support. This keeps the file small and preserves smooth, transparent edges.

    Do I still need a favicon.ico?

Modern browsers can use a PNG or SVG favicon declared in your HTML, but many still request /favicon.ico automatically, and some tools, RSS readers and bookmarking services only look there. Placing a small ICO with 16, 32 and 48 pixel versions at the root of your site avoids missing-icon errors in your server logs and works in every browser.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the conversion done on my device?

Yes. The icon is drawn and packed into an ICO file by your browser. Your image is not uploaded.

My image is not square. What happens?

It is scaled to fit inside the square and centred, with transparent padding around it. Nothing is cropped or stretched.

    Which sizes should I include?

For a website favicon: 16, 32 and 48. For a Windows program or shortcut icon: 16, 32, 48 and 256. Including more sizes makes the file larger but rarely causes problems.

How do I add the favicon to my website?

Upload the file as favicon.ico to the top folder of your site, so it is reachable at yoursite.com/favicon.ico. Optionally add <link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" sizes="any"> inside the <head> of your pages.

Why does my icon look blurry at 16×16?

Small sizes have very few pixels, so fine details and thin lines disappear. Simple, bold shapes work best. Some designers draw a simplified version specially for the smallest size.
