Compress Image

An upload form says “maximum 200 KB”, an email bounces, or a web page loads slowly because of huge photos. This tool makes JPG, PNG and WebP images smaller in file size. Choose a quality, or simply pick a size limit and let it find the best quality that fits. Everything happens in your browser, so your photos stay on your device.

    How to compress an image

    1. Base camp

Add your images with Choose files, drag them into the box, or paste a screenshot.

    2. Camp 1

Pick a Maximum file size such as 200 KB or 100 KB, or leave it at No limit and set the quality yourself. 75 is a good balance.

    3. Summit

Check the new size next to each image, then click Download, or Download all for a ZIP file.

    Quality or size limit?

    Use it whenWhat happens
Quality settingYou want smaller files and do not have a fixed limitEvery image is saved at the same quality; 70–80 looks almost identical to the original
Maximum file sizeA form, portal or app accepts only files up to a certain sizeThe highest quality that fits is found for each image; if needed, the pixel size is reduced too
Save as WebPThe image is for your own websiteWebP files are usually 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same quality

A photo from a phone camera is often 3–6 MB. Saved again at quality 75, it usually drops to a fifth of that with no difference you can see on a screen. For strict limits like 100 KB or 50 KB, the tool also lowers the number of pixels, because a 12-megapixel photo simply cannot fit in 50 KB and still look good.

PNG, GIF, BMP and AVIF images are saved as JPG, which is what almost every upload form expects. Transparent areas become white. If an image is already compressed better than the tool can do, you get the original back unchanged.

    Common size limits

Government and university portals, job applications and visa forms often ask for photos and scanned documents under 100 KB, 200 KB or 500 KB. Email works best under 1 MB per photo, and most websites recommend images under 200–300 KB. Choose the limit you need from the list, and every image you add is made to fit.

If you also need exact pixel dimensions, for example 600 × 600 px for a passport-style photo, first use Resize Image, then compress the result here.

    Frequently asked questions

    Are my photos uploaded?

No. The images are compressed by your browser on your own device and never sent to a server, which makes the tool safe for ID photos and scanned documents.

How do I reduce a photo to 100 KB?

Choose 100 KB under Maximum file size and add the photo. The tool tries lower qualities until the file fits, and reduces the pixel size if quality alone is not enough. The final size is shown next to the file.

    Will the image lose quality?

Compression always removes some detail, but at quality 70–80 the difference is very hard to see. With a very small size limit, such as 20 KB, the image will look softer, because there is little room for detail.

Can I compress PNG files and keep them as PNG?

PNG is lossless, so the browser cannot shrink it much while keeping it PNG. This tool saves PNG images as JPG, or as WebP if you choose it, which keeps transparency. For logos and screenshots with transparent backgrounds, choose WebP.

Is the photo’s location and date kept?

No. The compressed image contains only the picture, without EXIF details such as the camera, date or GPS location. That also saves a few kilobytes.
