PNG files can be surprisingly large, especially screenshots of photos and images exported from design tools. Converting them to JPG often cuts the size by 70–90%, which helps when an email bounces, an upload form has a size limit, or a web page loads slowly.

The rule of thumb is simple: photos belong in JPG, sharp-edged graphics belong in PNG. JPG’s compression is designed for the smooth gradients of real-world scenes, where it can discard a lot of data without any visible change. On text, line art and flat colours it can create faint smudges around edges, called artifacts.

So if your PNG is a photo, converting to JPG is almost always a win. If it is a screenshot full of small text or a logo, try a high quality setting (95) and check the result, or keep it as PNG.

Why does my PNG have a black or white background after converting?

Many converters turn transparent pixels black, because that is what a blank canvas contains. FormatYeti fills them with the colour you pick instead, white by default, so a logo with a transparent background comes out on a clean white square. Choose another colour if the image will sit on a coloured page.

    Frequently asked questions

Are my PNG files uploaded to a server?

No. The whole conversion happens in your browser. Your files stay on your computer or phone.

How much smaller will the JPG be?

For photos, usually 70–90% smaller. For screenshots with large flat areas the saving is smaller, and in rare cases a JPG can even be larger than a well-compressed PNG. The tool shows both sizes so you can decide.

    Will the JPG look worse?

For photos at quality 85–95, the difference is very hard to spot. Text and thin lines can show slight blurring at lower settings, so use a higher quality for screenshots.

    What happens to transparency?

JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you select. White is the default.

Can I convert PNG to JPG on an iPhone or Android phone?

Yes. The tool works in Safari, Chrome and Firefox on phones. Tap Choose files, pick images from your photo library or files, and download the results.
