PNG vs WebP
| PNG | WebP | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical file size | Large | Often 50–80% smaller |
| Transparency | Yes | Yes |
| Compression | Lossless | Lossy here, at the quality you set |
| Shown by all current browsers | Yes | Yes |
| Opens in older desktop software | Yes | Not always |
PNG stores every pixel exactly, which keeps graphics crisp but makes photos and large images heavy. WebP was designed by Google for the web: it compresses far more efficiently and still supports transparency, so a product photo on a transparent background can shrink from a few megabytes to a few hundred kilobytes.
This converter saves lossy WebP, the kind that gives the biggest savings. At quality 80 the difference from the original is very hard to see. Keep your PNG originals if you will edit the images again later.
Why websites use WebP
Images are usually the heaviest part of a web page. Smaller images mean pages appear sooner, use less mobile data and do better on Google’s Core Web Vitals, which are part of how pages are ranked. Tools like PageSpeed Insights often suggest “serve images in next-gen formats”, and WebP is the simplest way to follow that advice.
WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace and every modern browser handle WebP, so in most cases you can upload the converted files directly.
Which quality to choose
For photos, quality 75–85 gives very small files that look the same as the original at normal size. Logos, icons and screenshots with sharp edges or small text can show slight blurring at low settings, so use 90 or higher for them and compare the preview before you download.
Frequently asked questions
Are my PNG files uploaded?
No. The conversion happens in your browser on your own device. Your images are never sent to a server.
Is the transparent background kept?
Yes. WebP supports transparency, so transparent and semi-transparent areas stay exactly as they are in the PNG.
How much smaller will my images be?
It depends on the image. Photos and large graphics often become 50–80% smaller. Simple graphics with few colours shrink less, and a very small PNG icon may not get smaller at all.
Does it work in Safari on iPhone and Mac?
Yes. Safari cannot save WebP on its own, so FormatYeti loads a small WebP encoder into the page the first time you convert. It still runs on your device and nothing is uploaded.
Is image metadata kept?
No. Hidden information such as the software used or colour profile notes is not copied, which keeps the files small and clean for the web.
