An ICO file is a small container that can hold the same icon in several sizes, from 16×16 up to 256×256 pixels. This tool opens the icon, finds every image inside and saves them as PNG files with transparency. It runs in your browser, so the icon is never uploaded.

ICO is a format made for one job: icons. Browsers use it for favicons, and Windows uses it for program and folder icons. Most image editors, design tools and websites cannot open it, which is why you often need a PNG version instead.

Newer icons store each size as a PNG inside the ICO. Those images are copied out exactly, with no change. Older icons store bitmaps, which FormatYeti decodes, including their transparency mask, and saves as PNG.

Why does my browser show only one size?

When you open an ICO file in a browser or image viewer, it picks just one of the sizes inside, often not the largest. FormatYeti reads the file itself, so you can see and download every size. If an icon holds the same size more than once with different colour depths, the version with the most colours is kept.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is my icon uploaded?

No. The ICO file is read by your browser on your own device and never leaves it.

    Which size do I get?

By default, the largest image in the icon. Choose “Every size in the icon” to get one PNG for each size, named for example icon-32x32.png.

    Is transparency kept?

Yes. Transparent areas in the icon stay transparent in the PNG files.

Can I make the PNG bigger than the icon?

This tool keeps the original pixel sizes, since enlarging a small icon only makes it blurry. A 256×256 image, if the icon has one, is the sharpest you can get.

Can I turn a PNG back into an ICO?

Yes, use the PNG to ICO converter to build a favicon with the sizes you need.
