AVIF is one of the most efficient image formats available, which is why more and more websites serve their images in it. Many desktop programs, older Windows and macOS versions, office software and print services still cannot open it.

PNG is the better target when the image has transparency, such as a logo or a cut-out product photo, or when you want to keep editing it, because PNG never throws away detail. For photos you only want to share, the AVIF to JPG converter gives much smaller files.

    Which browsers can convert AVIF?

The conversion uses your browser’s own AVIF decoder. Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (iOS 16 and macOS Ventura or newer) all support it. If a file will not open, update your browser or try another one.

    Frequently asked questions

    Are my AVIF files uploaded?

No. Decoding and encoding happen locally in your browser, so your images stay on your device.

    Is transparency kept?

Yes. PNG supports full alpha transparency, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels are copied exactly.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the AVIF?

AVIF uses very efficient compression, while PNG stores every pixel without loss. A PNG five to ten times larger is normal for photos.

Should I choose PNG or JPG?

Choose PNG for graphics, screenshots, images with transparency or anything you will edit further. Choose JPG for photos you want to share or upload, because the file will be much smaller.

What happens to animated AVIF files?

PNG cannot store animation, so you get the first frame as a still image.
