HEIC vs JPG
| HEIC | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| Used by | iPhone and iPad camera (since iOS 11) | Almost every other camera and phone |
| Size at similar quality | About half | Baseline |
| Transparency and depth data | Yes | No |
| Opens on Windows | Only with an extra extension | Always |
| Accepted by upload forms | Often not | Everywhere |
HEIC stores photos with the same compression as HEVC video, so it fits roughly twice as many pictures into the same storage as JPG. Apple made it the default camera format in 2017. Outside the Apple world support is patchy: Windows needs a paid or optional extension, and many web forms, print services and older programs reject the files.
JPG is larger, but every device and service understands it. At quality 90 the difference from the HEIC original is not visible on normal photos.
How the conversion works
Safari on iPhone, iPad and Mac reads HEIC itself, so the photo converts instantly. Other browsers do not understand HEIC, so the page downloads a free HEIC decoder (libheif, about 1.5 MB) the first time you use it and runs it on your device. Either way, your photos are never uploaded.
The photo is turned the right way up, and if the HEIC file contains several images, such as a Live Photo or a burst, you get the main picture.
Stop your iPhone from saving HEIC
If you would rather get JPG straight from the camera, open Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. Photos you send by email or AirDrop to a non-Apple device are often converted automatically, too.
Frequently asked questions
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. The photos are decoded and saved as JPG inside your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere, which matters for personal photos.
Why can’t I open HEIC files on Windows?
Windows needs the HEIF and HEVC extensions from the Microsoft Store to show HEIC photos, and the HEVC one is not always free. Converting to JPG avoids that completely.
Will I lose quality?
JPG is a lossy format, like HEIC. At the default quality of 90 you will not see a difference on normal photos, but the JPG will be larger than the HEIC file.
Is the photo’s date and location kept?
No. The JPG contains only the picture, without EXIF details such as the date, camera or GPS location. That makes it safer to share, but keep the original if you need that information.
Can I convert many photos at once?
Yes. Select or drop as many HEIC files as you like. They are converted one after another, and Download all packs the JPGs into one ZIP file.
