JFIF vs JPG

| Image data | JPEG | JPEG |
| Quality | Identical | Identical |
| File extension | .jfif, .jfi, .jif | .jpg, .jpeg |
| Recognised by upload forms | Often not | Always |
| Why you see it | A Windows file-type setting | The usual default |
JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format. It is the standard wrapper that almost every .jpg file on earth already uses internally. A .jfif file and a .jpg file differ only in the letters after the dot.
The trouble is that many upload forms, online shops and older apps check the extension rather than the contents, and reject anything that does not end in .jpg, .jpeg or .png. Renaming fixes it, and this tool does that safely for many files at once, checking each one so a file that is secretly a PNG or WebP still gets converted properly.
Why does Windows save images as JFIF?
Windows decides which extension to use for a downloaded image by looking up its MIME type, image/jpeg, in the registry. On many Windows 10 and 11 computers that entry says .jfif instead of .jpg, often after another program changed it. Browsers then follow the setting.
To fix it permanently, open the Registry Editor, go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/jpeg and change the Extension value from .jfif to .jpg. Editing the registry affects your whole system, so only do this if you are comfortable with it. Converting files here is the safe alternative.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting JFIF to JPG reduce quality?
Not here. Because JFIF files already contain JPEG data, the tool keeps the original bytes and only changes the file name. Quality and file size stay exactly the same.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser, and your files never leave your device.
Can I just rename the file myself?
Yes, renaming .jfif to .jpg in File Explorer works for real JFIF files. This tool is handy for many files at once, on phones, or when Windows hides file extensions. It also checks the contents and properly converts files that are not actually JPEGs.
Is the photo’s metadata kept?
Yes. Since the bytes are unchanged, any metadata in the original, such as the date taken or camera model, is preserved. Use PNG to JPG or WebP to JPG if you want a copy without metadata.
What if the file is not really a JPEG?
The tool reads the first bytes of each file. If it finds something other than JPEG data, it decodes the image and re-encodes it as a high-quality JPG instead, and tells you it did so.
