For photos, WebP and JPG are close cousins: both compress by discarding fine detail, and WebP simply does it a little more efficiently. That makes JPG the natural target when you need a photo to work in an app that does not understand WebP.

The one thing JPG cannot store is transparency. If your WebP has a transparent background, for example a product cut-out or a logo, the transparent area is filled with the background colour you pick (white by default). If you need to keep transparency, convert WebP to PNG instead.

    Choosing the right JPG quality

The quality slider controls how much detail the JPG encoder may discard. Between 85 and 95 the difference is very hard to see, but the file size can halve. Go lower (70–80) for images that only need to look good on a phone screen, and use 95–100 if you plan to edit the photo further.

    Frequently asked questions

Do my WebP files get uploaded?

No. Your browser decodes the WebP and encodes the JPG on your own device. No file is sent to FormatYeti or anyone else.

Will I lose quality converting WebP to JPG?

A small amount, because JPG is a lossy format. At the default quality of 90 the difference is invisible for practically all photos. If you need a lossless copy, use the WebP to PNG converter.

What happens to a transparent background?

JPG has no transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with the background colour you choose in the settings. White is the default.

    Is the photo’s metadata kept?

No. The JPG is created fresh from the pixels, so camera details and GPS location stored in the WebP are not copied. That is usually a privacy bonus when sharing photos.

My .webp file was actually a JPG. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Some sites name files incorrectly. The tool looks at the real contents, so any image your browser can open will convert.
