PNG never throws away detail, so it is a good intermediate format when you want to crop, retouch or annotate a photo and save it several times. It does not restore detail the HEIC compression already removed, but nothing more is lost from here on.

For sharing or uploading photos, JPG is usually the better choice, because a PNG of a full camera photo is many times larger. Use the HEIC to JPG converter for that.

    How the conversion works

Safari reads HEIC itself, so on Apple devices the photo converts instantly. In Chrome, Edge and Firefox the page downloads a free HEIC decoder (libheif, about 1.5 MB) the first time and runs it on your device. Your photos are never uploaded.

Images with transparency, which some apps save as HEIF, keep their transparent areas in the PNG.

    Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to convert private photos here?

Yes. Everything happens in your browser on your own device. The photos are not uploaded, stored or seen by anyone.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the HEIC?

PNG is lossless and stores every pixel exactly, while HEIC uses very efficient lossy compression. A PNG five to ten times larger than the HEIC is normal for photos.

Should I choose PNG or JPG?

Choose PNG if you will edit the image further or need transparency. Choose JPG if you want to share, email or upload the photo, because the file will be much smaller.

Is the photo’s date and location kept?

No. The PNG contains only the picture, without EXIF details such as the date, camera model or GPS position.

Does it work with Live Photos?

Yes, you get the still photo. The short video part of a Live Photo is stored in a separate file and is not converted.
