It is worth being honest about what this conversion does: a PNG made from a JPG looks exactly like the JPG. It cannot restore detail that JPG compression already removed, and it will not make a blurry photo sharp. What it does is freeze the image so that nothing more is lost when you edit and save it again.

Good reasons to convert are a form or service that only accepts PNG, a plan to edit the image repeatedly, or a need to add transparency later in an editor. If you only want to share a photo, keeping it as JPG is usually better because the file is much smaller.

Making a transparent PNG from a JPG

JPG files never contain transparency, so the PNG you get here has the same solid background as your photo. To make the background transparent, open the PNG in an editor and remove it there. Starting from a PNG avoids extra quality loss while you work.

    Frequently asked questions

Is converting JPG to PNG safe and private?

Yes. Your images are processed locally in your browser and never uploaded.

Will converting to PNG improve the image quality?

No. The PNG is a perfect copy of the JPG as it is, including any compression artifacts. It simply stops further quality loss from this point on.

Why is the PNG file so much larger?

PNG stores every pixel without lossy compression. Photos have a lot of fine detail, so a lossless copy is naturally several times larger than the JPG.

Does it work with .jpeg and .jfif files?

Yes. JPG, JPEG and JFIF are all the same format with different file name endings, and all of them are accepted.

    Are photos rotated correctly?

Yes. Phones often store rotation as a separate tag instead of rotating the pixels. The browser applies that tag while decoding, so the PNG comes out the right way up.
